Despite top components, Microsoft Inc (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) posting huge gains in the session, the S&P 500 index was in the red.

What was turning out to be a boring session, got interesting as the index had its worst session since October 12. The index was unable to post a new all-time high (4576.75 vs. 4590) or a new all-time closing high as well.

For the session, the index declined by 20.25 handles to close at 4545.

Alphabet Inc. barely beat out Microsoft to be the leader of the top components. Off a blockbuster Q3 report the issue added $135.11 or 4.8% to post a new all-time closing high at $2928.55. That blew away the cash index’s decline of 0.51%.

JP Morgan Chase & Co.(NYSE: JPM) led the barrage of selling in the financial sector and was the biggest loser of the top components. The issue declined by $3.57 or 2.1% to end the day at $167.83.
