The S&P 500 index made a new all-time high and closing high for the fourth day in a row.

The index followed through on Thursday’s late day rally begrudgingly. Off the 6:00 PM open, it had a brief retreat but found just under the close at 4451. That level was not revisited during the regular session as the index matched the Thursday’s close mid-morning and drifted higher for the remainder of the day.

While the financials take a breather from their torrid run, consumer staples and utilities outperformed while energy and industrials underperformed.

For the session, the index, just off the high for the day, added 7.5 handles to close at 4462.50. It should be noted that the volume and index itself had its smallest intraday range in months.
